You can fill your yard, deck, patio, wherever you want with solar lights in many different kinds of flowers! Some of these come as a single flower, while others come in bunches of 5-6.

Pergolas and Other Landscaping Structures For the Northwest

Decorative landscaping structures can add a lot to a home: value, beauty, and an outside living or dining area. Some of the most popular landscape structures are pergolas, gazebos, and arbors.

Pergolas

Coming from the Latin word pergola, meaning a projecting eve, pergolas were popular in Italian gardens during the times of the Renaissance. Pergolas have vertical posts that anchor and sustain crossbeams and lattice. Though they can be constructed out of vinyl or fiberglass, wood is typically the most popular material and cedar is typically used because of its durability.

Smaller pergolas have four posts and measure 8′ x 8′. The smaller styles are usually used to bring attention to a specific spot in a garden, like a pool or sitting area. There are no roofs or walls on this type of structure, so one can feel the breeze while relaxing inside of it.

Bigger pergolas are often used to form a passageway. Different pergola styles cover walkways, link pavilions to each other, bring attention to a terrace, or provide an extra architectural element to one’s home.

Gazebos

Gazebos are used all over the world and each country has a different name for them. They can add a beauty and function to any backyard.

Gazebos are usually octagonal or round in shape and can be small enough to fit a few garden lounge chairs in or big enough to host a band. They will have at least four posts and are open structures made of wood, metal, vinyl, or fiberglass. Gazebos have a roof that has one or two tiers that provide protection from the elements.

Modern homeowners may choose to build a gazebo in a backyard as part of deck, pool area, or even onto an area of concrete on a patio. People look for gazebos to host parties in, shade an outside dining set, or to cover a spa or lounge area.

Non-traditional uses of gazebos include using them as a work or meeting space if the weather is nice. Some suggest using a gazebo as a play area for children. Gardeners are using gazebos as potting sheds so everything can be conveniently located close to the home garden. Some homeowners even place exercise equipment in their gazebos.

Arbors

Arbors in the garden are typically arches that create a focal point to a bigger element in a yard or to welcome guests to one’s home. These structures can also provide a short walkway cover, be placed over a bench or gate, be used at the beginning of a path, and indicate a walkway up to a home or an opening in a garden.

Arbors often have vines growing on them and can be made of wood or vinyl and can be used in a garden of any size. A cedar arbor is the most popular type because of the durability of the natural resource. A vinyl arbor is the second most popular choice for its durability and light weight.

Placing Landscaping Structures

Deciding on a place to put landscaping structures can be as difficult as choosing which one to get. One needs to think about what makes the most sense for their garden and how much room is available.

Landscaping structures are great to use at the end or beginning of a path. If there is a hill on one’s home that has a great view, take advantage of the viewpoint by placing a structure there. When a water element is available, landscape designers will place a structure near the water so the sound can be enjoyed. The water element could be a pool, pond, or small waterfall. The deck is also a great place to build a landscaping structure since it is a convenient location close to the home. Some will even place a landscape structure in the middle of a large garden to create a reading area or tea room.

Using a landscaping structure is a simple way to add an element of style and elegance to any home in a manner that can be cost efficient and worth every penny.

Landscape Drawing – An Easy Approach For Beginners

A landscape is an expanse of scenery that can be seen in a single view. Making a landscape drawing is almost a construction job on paper; all sketches are built, with different parts put together on paper.

Items needed for drawing a landscape include: pens, pencils, A4 drawing pad, a soft eraser to rub off mistakes, wherever you decide to turn out your masterpieces, whether in your kitchen or studio or anywhere, a drawing board is very useful.

Illustrators and artists need to know how well to fill a blank sheet of paper with meaningful lines of drawing and shading. The latter suggests form, distance and depth. simplicity is the key to this.

To begin, pick up a picture of an expanse of land and sketch out the contents in the proportion you see them in the picture. To denote distant objects, use vertical lines, for objects the foreground, use horizontal lines. Nearer objects such as tree are denoted with cross hatching .Cross hatch is a combination of similar diagonal lines going the other way. The grass is represented with little line dots and dashes. Take some time to see what you have done.

Now its time to shade, simplicity is the key again. Near objects are fully cross hatched to give the impression of nearness while farther ones are lightly crosshatched to add depth and form to our drawing.

We are done with a picture. Now pick another landscape with trees and sketch again. This time suggest leaves on the trees by using distinct wavy lines. Dashes and dots are used to denote grasses and they fade as they move further away. Shade as instructed previously instructed. Shading with little practice should be done rapidly. To do it fast is better; it helps to cut down errors because there’s no time to worry or doubt your ability. Your brain and hand just continues working. Be bold and confident, ignore minor mistakes, expect them and learn from them.

Beginners try to include every detail of what they see, this is almost impossible, leave that to a camera. Again simplicity is it. Do not try too hard to produce a perfect replica of what you see. At times a perfect work of art is not what you include, but what you leave out.

Some upcoming artists believe they are doing very well if they turn out three or four drawings in a week, but this is not good if you are learning to draw. The more you do it, the better you become. So as you learn, churn them out as much as possible. For now you might not be able to frame them but as time goes on you get better. Little by little, stop drawing from pictures and start to draw without them .The essence of the pictures is to help you get the proportion of each object in a particular frame of reference. And make sure you always date your work to measure the level of your improvement and bolster you confidence.

Deck Lighting – Creating Night Time Ambience On Your Outdoor Deck

Warm weather allure on your outside deck moves an atmospheric notch when you install soft ambient deck lighting. Evening meals “out on the deck”…reading…listening to music…even adding a soft glow to outdoors deck camp outs for the kids all the more possible with the latest generation of long-life easy-to-install outdoor deck lights designs.

Deck Post Lights – With Optional Light Sensor Controls. Any number of deck post light designs can be used to increase outdoor ambience and day-to-night use. Think of flood lights…lantern designs set in as deck post lights or wall mounted…quartz flood lights…LED deck lights. Dawn-to-dusk adaptation becomes a cinch with the use of high tech hi-lo light sensor units…saving energy when you need to, or providing motion detection when people enter the deck area. Deck lamps can be post-mounted, screwed into the deck directly, or wall mounted too adapt to any outdoor lighting need.

Deck Step Lights. Deck stair lights are critical for night time safety. Homeowners should consider a pattern of deck stair lights, with two fixtures on the opposite ends of wide stairs over 6 to 8 feet, or a single center-positioned deck step light for narrower deck stairs.

LED Deck Lighting. Recessed deck lighting got a design boost with the advent of solar powered LED deck lighting systems. A simple kit for 1 or multiple lighting points, LED deck lighting designs exploit the “free energy” from the sun…charging up in under 4 hours…generating up to 12 hours of subtle low-wattage lighting…and the Big Winner is that you’re entirely free of troublesome wires and the associated additional wiring costs. Several solar panels “collect” energy during the day. You can program the LED deck lights to come on automatically, or use a remote control for when-needed lighting control.

Low Voltage Deck Lighting. Is your deck shaded and limited in terms of capturing sunlight? If so then the alternative to solar deck lighting is hard-wired low voltage deck lighting. You’ll get 100% guaranteed deck light-on-demand with the flick of a wall switch. Around 10 watts of power running through halogen bulbs gives you complete control over your deck lighting needs. Design materials include the range of copper, wood, bronze and mixed materials. Some individual low voltage deck lights can be screwed directly into the deck, be grounded and placed along garden pathways.

Solar Deck Lighting. Residential deck and stairs or even large landscape lighting needs are well met by the new breed of 2 to 4 watt solar deck lighting designs. Typically fabricated in long life anodized metal, solar deck post lights weight less than 2 pounds…each can be located exactly where you need it…self-contained with discrete solar panels combining with LED intensive lights…plus, the huge advantage of “no messy wires and connections” to be made. Charging time of 4 hours equals sufficient stored energy to run for up to 12 hours.

Recessed Deck Lighting – Subtle Designing With Light. In deck lighting, while custom in design and installation, creates the most subtle yet safe way to locate deck lighting so that you and your friends can comfortably see…yet not be blinded. Recessed deck lighting systems safely trail connective wires below the deck, and eye line. Once wired in to a nearby switch box, recessed deck lighting fixtures carry a protective cap so that the accidental step from kids, dogs or guests causes no harm. Alternative to wires? Look into the range of solar deck lights, especially recessed deck lighting kits…easy to install, weather resistant.
